When Larian Studios divulged their plans in December for Baldur's Gate III to hit the Xbox Series, there was speculation - hopeful musings - that the venerated RPG might debut directly on Game Pass. However, it became clear that the launch did not include a Game Pass premiere, yet fans continued to wish for its eventual appearance on Microsoft's esteemed subscription service. It would be prudent not to hold one’s breath for that outcome, though.
IGN's Kat Bailey had the opportunity to speak with Swen Vincke, the founder of Larian Studios, on the matter. When prompted about Microsoft's offer for Baldur's Gate III to join Game Pass some time ago, Vincke was quite clear:
"Right from the start, we affirmed it wasn't destined for Game Pass, and it remains so. These are delicate topics, Kat. The reality is we're dedicated to crafting a complete game experience—with a beginning, middle, and end. It's a substantial game we've developed, deserving a commensurate price, and that seems perfectly fair. We don't impose any additional micro-transactions; what you purchase is a comprehensive, substantial game. And this is the business model that sustains our future game development.”
That's the definitive stance. Vincke and his team at Larian appear firmly uninterested in a Game Pass release for Baldur's Gate III, and this isn't a studio that's known for misleading statements. His comments suggest this decision is final rather being than a feint due to contractual secrecy obligations.
